Safety

Seven rules for a safe day at sea.

Being out on the sea always involves some risk. We keep the boats and equipment in good order – but as the skipper, you carry the biggest responsibility. If in doubt, ask us.

  1. Think safety first

Get to know the boat and how many people or how much weight it can carry. Keep the centre of gravity low and don't stand up in the boat.

  2. Bring everything you need

Anchor, rope and safety line. A phone with a full battery. Enough fuel – never leave without a spare can. GPS or chart and compass. Check the bilge pump. First-aid kit, gaff and knife.

  3. Respect the weather and the current

Check the forecast before every trip and find out about currents and shallow areas.

  4. Follow the rules of the road

Give way to boats coming from starboard and to boats you overtake. Leisure boats give way to commercial vessels. Within 50 m of land, no more than 5 knots. Cross large ships early and always behind them. Boats without navigation lights are not meant for use in the dark. In Norway, anyone born after 1 January 1980 needs a boating licence for boats over 8 m or with more than 25 hp.

  5. Wear a life jacket

Everyone on board should wear a life jacket – pay special attention to children. Stay with the boat if it capsizes. In case of man overboard, call for help immediately.

  6. Be rested and sober

In Norway the blood alcohol limit on board is 0.08%. If you are rested and alert, you handle the unexpected better.

  7. Show consideration

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. We are all responsible for each other's safety – at sea we are all friends.
